Project: Alstom Depot GRP Walkway
Details: Open Grid GRP Walkway for Siding Access

Installation of Open Grid GRP Walkway for Siding Access. The project involved replacing an old timber walkway with an Open Grid Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) walkway at a railway depot.

The primary objective was to provide a lightweight, durable, and safe walkway for train drivers and maintenance staff while ensuring it could withstand heavy loads, resist slipping hazards during winter, and fit the unique geometry of the track

The Challenges

Load Requirements: The walkway needed to be wide enough (over 1.8 meters) to accommodate the movement of trolleys and able to withstand a weight load of 1 ton for safe and efficient use.

Track Geometry: The track’s layout presented unique installation challenges, requiring a bespoke solution tailored to the geometry of the sidings.

Installation Timeframe: Due to a train driver strike, the installation needed to be completed under line blocks - temporary closures of tracks to ensure safe working conditions during the installation process.

Disruption Minimisation: The work had to be completed over 8 days due to frequent train movements in and out of the sidings and train wash area.

The Solution

Product Selection: Open Grid GRP was chosen for its lightweight, non-slip, and durable properties. The open grid structure was ideal for ensuring the walkway did not become slippery during the winter salting process, which could cause safety concerns for staff.

Bespoke Design: The walkway was designed to meet the specific geometry of the track while meeting the width requirement of 1.8 meters. The GRP material was also able to withstand the 1-ton load, making it suitable for accessing the mainline and supporting trolley use.

Installation Process:

  • The old timber crossing was removed, and the GRP walkway was installed within an 8-day period.
  • The installation was carefully planned and executed to minimise disruptions, with line blocks in place to ensure the safety of workers and maintain track operations.
  • All waste materials from the old crossing were removed by Premier Rail and recycled where possible to minimise environmental impact
