At New Brighton Station, Premier Rail Services was tasked with replacing the old, worn stone stairs with new GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) steps. The project included the installation of a flatwork surface around the two DNOs (Distribution Network Operators) and other electrical boxes. To enhance safety, a handrail was added to prevent falls from height, and clear access point signage was installed for improved visibility. This case study highlights the collaborative effort, efficient problem-solving, and successful project delivery under tight constraints.

Job Description:
The primary objective of this project was to replace the outdated and worn stone stairs with new, durable GRP steps that would ensure safety and accessibility for station users. The scope of work
included:
- GRP Step Installation: The old stone stairs were blocked off, and new GRP steps were installed with careful attention to safety and durability.
- Flatwork Surface Installation: A flat surface was created around the two DNOs and other electrical boxes to provide safe access and prevent obstructions.
- Handrail Installation: A GRP SafeClamp handrail system was installed to prevent falls from height and ensure the safety of those using the steps.
- Safety Signage: Clear access point signage was added to provide important visual cues for station users.
Materials and Equipment Used:
- GRP SafeClamp Handrail: Yellow profile tube, 3-way/4-way/elbow connectors, base feet, 3 & 4-way universal connectors, top rail & mid rail (1100mm where applicable), and all associated fixings.
- GRP Grating: 38mm standard open mesh grating in yellow.
- Frame and Leg Profiles: 200 channel profiles for frame and legs, 75 angle brackets.
- GRP Access Steps & Landing: Featuring 38mm standard open mesh grating, contrasting stair nosings, ergonomic handrails on both sides with top & mid rail.
Challenges & Solutions:
While the team faced challenges, particularly with the limited experience in this type of work, the collaborative efforts ensured successful delivery.
